Lecture #1: Is Mathematics a Necessary Condition for Economic Analysis?

Dr. Raouf Hanna
Professor and Head of Economics

Dr. Hanna is an Egyptian born, who is also fluent in Arabic. He received his primary, secondary, and undergraduate education in Egypt prior coming to the USA. He received his MA degree in economics from Ohio State University and his Ph.D. degree from Indiana University. In addition, he is a University of Chicago Post-Doctoral Fellow, an Alumni of Harvard University Management Developing Program, and the former student of three Nobel Prize Winner in Economics, namely Ragner Frisch, Jan Timbergen, and Milton Friedman. Dr. Hanna has over a quarter of a century of teaching and research experience in the areas of Applied Econometrics, International Finance, Creative and Critical Thinking & Decision Making, System Thinking and Model Simulation, Market Research and Information Systems, Project Evaluation and Feasibility Studies, Transnational Technology Transfer, and Higher Education Curriculum Development.

Dr. Hanna is the author of several books and many refereed articles published in national and international economic journals. He serves on national advisory boards and board of directors of many non-profit community-based organizations, and is a member of many professional organizations. For ten years he served as the Associate Editor of the Journal of Economics, and has serves on the Editorial board of several other economic journals. Dr. Hanna’s grants and contracts funding activities span from local community projects to national and international projects. He has served as Principle Investigator, Director, co-Director, and/or Administrator of over twenty five projects.


Dr. Hanna served as member of significant University Committees during his tenure at EMU. This including the Environmental Scan Committee of the Strategic Planning Committee, The Cross-Cutting Committee on International Education, the Cross-Cutting Committee on Center, Institutes and Interdisciplinary Research, and The College of Arts & Sciences Strategic Planning Committee. Recently he was appointed to the Coordinating Council of International Programming, The Institutional Peer Analysis Group, The Continuous Improving Advisory Committee, The Strategic Planning-Continuous Improvement Advisory Council, and to undertake the University’s Economic and Social Impact Analysis on the community and the State.

Dr. Hanna’s teaches Econometrics Theory, Econometrics Applications, Model Building and Time Series Forecasting.
