Q1: What is the EMU General Education mathematics requirement and what courses will satisfy this requirement?
The new general education program will be in effect in the Fall 2007. In the meantime, what follows is the current general education program.
The general education requirement includes one course in mathematical reasoning. Any of the following courses will satisfy the general education requirement:
MATH 109 Math for Elementary Teachers II
(elementary education students only)
MATH 110 Mathematical Reasoning
MATH 118 Linear Models and Probability

Note: You are eligible for a waiver of this requirement if you score 23 or above on the math section of the ACT or 580 or above on the Math section of the SAT. A waiver form must be obtained from the Academic Advising Center. Curriculum or major requirements must still be satisfied
Q2: Where can I find more information about the placement exam?
The placement exam is used to assist the advisors in placing students into an appropriate mathematics class. You can read more about the placement exam and even download a practice study sheet.
If you have questions about your placement after taking the placement exam, you should speak with Dr. Chris Gardiner.
If you are unsure about your placement into MATH 108, speak with one of the elementary education advisors, Drs. Carla Tayeh and Barbara Britton.
Q3: Where can I get information regarding transfer credits and course equivalencies?
You can get online assistance for most transfer equivalencies . However, especially if you are transferring to EMU from out of state, you will want to bring your transcripts and course descriptions to one of the mathematics advisors. They will be able to determine course equivalencies.
Q4: Where can I get information about the second bachelor's program?
Dr. Gardiner will look at your transcripts and advise you on a second bachelor's in mathematics.
Q5: Where can I get information regarding post BA teacher certification?
Either Drs. Chris Gardiner or Joanne Caniglia can assist you with secondary teacher certification in mathematics. Drs. Carla Tayeh and Barbara Britton advise students with an elementary teaching certificate on the requirements for adding the mathematics endorsement.
Q6: Who should I speak to for information about graduate programs in mathematics?
The Department of Mathematics offers a Masters Degree in Mathematics which allows for concentrations in statistics, computer science and mathematics education.
Dr. Walter Parry is the graduate coordinator and can answer most questions. For specific questions about the concentration in mathematics education, contact Dr. Joanne Caniglia.
In addition, teachers may earn a masters degree in curriculum through the College of Education which allows for concentrations in mathematics. You might contact Dr. Joanne Caniglia for the secondary program and Dr. Joan Jones for both the middle level and elementary programs.
Q7: Where can I get more information about the elementary mathematics education program?
For information about the mathematics minor or major for elementary education students, you can download a copy of the advising sheet. In addition, Dr. Carla Tayeh's homepage includes a link with more information for elementary education majors. Both Drs. Carla Tayeh and Barbara Britton are advisors for this program.
