Fall 2002

Contents

The winds of change blew into the EMU math department and shuffled our Faculty around. Dr. Bette Warren became the new permanent Department Head and Elaine Richards is now heading the Developmental Math program. Some faculty members left or retired, and we acquired two young tenure-track professors. Also among the Faculty News is that our own Dr. Chris Gardiner won an award as Advisor of the Year for the College of Arts and Science.

And everything old is new again as we share updates from some of our alumni in the Alumni News section. It is good to catch up with former students and hear about their lives and loves. Those of you who are alumni are invited to share your stories and keep in touch!

Thank you to everyone who shared their stories and contributed words and photographs to this issue. Enjoy!

Welcome and Thank You for reading our online newsletter! This issue highlights the people, events, and activities that shaped our Fall 2002 semester in the EMU Math Department.
Among the big Events for the semester was a celebration of Dr. Nelly Ullman’s work and retirement in October. We have photos and stories from this event.
Our Students have been busy both inside and outside our classrooms. Here, we feature Amelia Biehl, our Doc M Scholarship winner for the 2002-2003 academic year. We also enjoyed helping several students prepare for the Putnam Exam in Mathematics (which they took on December 7th) and hearing about the joys and challenges of our students who were student teaching this fall. We share some of their stories here.
